Gravestone Rubbing Workshop

A workshop that introduces the quiet, lovely art of gravestone rubbing

  • 20 US dollars
  • Missouri Boulevard

Service Description

Headstone, tombstone or gravestone rubbings are a great way to preserve a bit of history. If you're interested in genealogy or even just the art in your local cemetery, you're sure to enjoy this easy workshop! It's amazing to see the details the wax rubbings can reveal that seem lost to the naked eye on the weathered stones! Join Sarah Scheffer for this fun fall workshop! Sarah has been practicing the art of monument rubbing since 2015 in various states around the Midwest and is trained in the art of proper and safe handling of these old and fragile stones. Please note that the utmost care is to be taken in the use of these stones and those who blatantly disregard the rules for proper handling will be asked to leave and banned from any future workshops of this sort. We take this very seriously. This group will meet on Saturday, September 30 at the Woodland Old City Cemetery between 2pm until approximately 5:00pm (right before sunset). Just drop in at 5pm and the instructor will help you create your very own keepsakes! You are invited to look for family members buried at this location, or simply walk amongst the stones and appreciate the beautiful craftsmanship that went into these old monuments. Finished pieces will have an opportunity for display at the Halloween Season at Capital Arts through October 31. It is recommended that the highest quality aqaba paper is used which ensures longevity to the rubbings. We order from a small business based out of the Northeast and that has been a leader in the gravestone rubbing industry since 1997. Each participant will receive 2 sheets of 27 inch by 37 inch aqaba paper. Wax rubbing discs in various colors, soft brushes and proper tape will be available for everyone to use. Cost for this experience is $20 per person. Additional paper ($3.00 each) and wax discs ($7.00 each) will be available for purchase if needed. Wax disc prices are only for those wishing to take the discs home. There will be plenty to use only during the workshop if desired. We can't wait to see you there!
