Sharon Sestak Strickland

Sharon Sestak Strickland

Raised on a farm near Russellville, Missouri, Sharon was inspired by natural settings. She has enjoyed art and doing artwork all of her life.

Although not an art major, her training as a home economics, nursery school and special education teacher did involve basic training in art. Her nursery school students taught her much about artistic self-expression--she still has and treasures works done by students from thirty years ago. She has also studied  traditional Chinese brush painting under Hung-Wei Lee of Taiwan and Mr. Yan of Tientsin, China. She plans to resume classes in this area of study,  and is doing independent study of photography, traditional Japanese Enso painting, silk painting, as well as  mandala forms. She is learning to do various bookbinding techniques, incorporating artwork and photography into handmade books.

She describes her work as abstract impressionism, influenced by the Eastern philosophy of art.  She enjoys experimenting with a variety of materials and techniques. Her usual medium of choice is painting on silk and on rice paper.  Her work has been included in gallery exhibits in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, as well as in Jefferson City, and Columbia, Missouri, and can be seen locally at The Art Bazaar (High St., Jefferson City) and online at
