Joan graduated from Brigham Young University where she studied art and taught classes at the campus craft store. She was introduced to calligraphy in high school and began a more serious study in the early 80’s, learning from many of the top lettering artists in the country. She has taught calligraphy classes for over 20 years at various venues including community colleges, art galleries, and for calligraphy guilds from California to Alabama. She was chosen to be on the faculty of five international lettering conferences over the last decade, teaching students from as far away as Japan.
She has been on the Board of Directors of the international Association for the Calligraphic Arts for ten years and is also a member of Best of Missouri Hands, Missouri Fiber Artists, and the St. Louis Calligraphy Guild. Joan has exhibited regionally and been represented by galleries in two states. Her calligraphic art has been published in Letter Arts Review, Somerset Studio and Somerset Gallery, Arnold Grummer’s Complete Guide to Papercasting, Handlettering for Crafts, and The Calligrapher’s Engagement Calendar.
Joan has lived in Jefferson City Missouri for 14 years, a record in one place for her family. She loves teaching, does wedding work as well as hand-printed cards & prints, original broadsides and commissions, etc. but especially likes working on large canvases. Her top request for teaching is a method for calligraphic papercasting she developed and refined over the past 16 years.
