capital jazzfest & street art fair

Friday, September 17, 2010 Jefferson City Memorial Park

call for schools

Capital Arts would like to invite art teachers and their students (art club) to join us Friday, September 17 to chalk the pavement.  If you have never before participated in Street Art we want to encourage you to come out and join in a day of music, creativity and fun.  Artwork will be viewed at JAZZFEST on Saturday.

Sign up your students!  Volunteers will be near the Memorial Park pavilion entrance for chalk pick-up and you will be directed as to where to begin your Street Art.  You will have a 4’X6’ area to chalk.  Let your imagination run wild.  Reproduce a renaissance painting, a still-life, a cartoon, or portrait - whatever your students want.   Artwork will be judged and PRIZES will be given.

Artwork must be constructed as a MURAL placing 4’X6’ squares next to each other lengthwise, or form a square with by joining four 4X6 squares.  Competition between Elementary Schools will be held and prizes awarded.

Important Suggestions:
•    Design and grid the artwork prior to the event and make copies for each student.
•    Only pastel chalk provided by Capital Arts may be used.    If you need more chalk in particular colors, you can exchange colors with other street artists or ask at the registration table.
•    Artwork must be appropriate for public viewing.  Capital Arts is entitled to photograph and reproduce the street painting for purposes of historical record and future publicity.
•    Sign your work.  If you are reproducing an image originally created by another artist it is important to credit the original artist and the title.
•    Please respect the street artists who are working near you.  Please do not walk on their drawings.
Supplies you may want to bring:
•    Whisk broom or brush for cleaning drawing surface
•    Masking tape for creating sharp borders, edges or geometry
•    A portable dust-buster is handy to remove excess chalk dust.
•    Disposable latex gloves are excellent for blending colors with fingers and for protection.
•    A 2-by-2 piece of cardboard allows one to sit or stand on the drawing without disturbing the work.
•    Chalkboard eraser for blending larger areas of color - an excellent tool for laying a basic undercoat of color covering your square onto which other colors may be applied.  Also for blending, a plastic sheet, felt, and short cut brushes.
•    A towel or paper towels for wiping up
•    If showers are threatened, bring a plastic drop cloth to cover work temporarily.
•    Water will be provided
